If I read one more article about “100 things successful people do in the morning” I’m going to scream.
Does anyone seriously believe that successful people spend 1 hour meditating, 1 hour working out, 30 minutes picking vegetables from their own garden to make an organic green smoothie, 40 minutes journaling and another 30 minutes reading a book?
Like, you do all that and the morning’s already gone. When do you have time to do the work you love?!
Cos isn’t that why we’re all searching for the perfect morning routine? So that we can be more productive and have more time to work and play?
If you really want to set yourself up for a productive way, forget about lifestyle hacks, crazy morning rituals and clickbait articles.
Here’s the secret to create the perfect morning routine, one that helps you reach your goals instead than filling your day with more mindless to-do tasks:
1. What’s Your Why?
If you want to wake up early, you’d better know why you’re doing it.
Is it because that’s the only time you have for your side hustle before you head out to your 9-5 job? Are you a morning person who has plenty of energy in the morning and want to make the most of it? Do you think you could get more done if you worked when the rest of the world is still asleep?
If you’re doing it just because you’ve heard that’s what Tony Robbins does, when that alarm rings at 6:00am, you’ll quick the snooze button and go back to sleep.
2. What Are Your Goals?
Now you’re waking up early each morning, you’d better use that time in a productive way. Cos if you’re using those two precious hours before you head to work to scroll your Facebook feed, you may as well have stayed in bed.
Ask yourself what are your goals? What’s the most important thing you need to do to move the needle forward in your project? Do that.
But first, make sure that goal is aligned with your values. It must be something that excites you and makes you jump out of bed full of energy in the morning.
Because if your goal is to start a business you don’t like just to make a quick buck, you’ll be back to hitting the snooze button soon when you realise how hard it is to make that happen.
FYI, if your goal is simply to start the day in a calm and peaceful way, that’s cool too. There are plenty of mindfulness practices that can help you relax, ground you in the moment and start the day on the right foot.

3. Visualize Your Perfect Morning
Now you know what your goals are, visualize what the perfect morning is like for you.
This will be different for everyone and that’s ok. What works for one person may not work for another. You do you.
Maybe you want to wake slowly with natural light peeking through the windows, sip a cup of coffee and think about the day that lies ahead. Or you may go for a run to get that energy pumping. Or maybe you just want to rush out of bed and write another chapter of your book.
All of that’s fine. Just be sure not to waste any time on time-suckers like emails and social media. Once you get dragged into those black holes, you’ll waste all your time on other people’s agendas and get all stressed out because of the time you’ve wasted!
MY MORNING ROUTINE
I’ve experimented with lots of different morning routines and rituals throughout the years. Here’s what’s working for me now:
I wake up at 6:00am in the morning. I stretch, pull back the curtains and head to the kitchen to make my breakfast. Sometimes, it’s oatmeal with almond milk, nuts and blueberries. Other times, an avocado toast with chia seeds. Or simply a green juice. It doesn’t matter. I just want something light that fills me with energy.
After that, I have a quick shower, brush my teeth and do my skincare routine. I get dressed. I sit down at my desk to do The 5 Minute Journal. Sometimes, I’ll do the morning pages too. Then, I start to write articles for my blog, guests posts and books.
The mornings are the most productive time of the day for me so I use them to do what matters the most to me: writing.
Meditation, exercise and all that malarkey can wait until I’m done writing. 😉
